At the heart of the impressive buildings of the Grand Seminary built between 1769 and 1775 by Cardinal de Rohan, the library provides the book lover the pleasure of the scent of leather, ink and paper. The director, Louis Schaeffler is a bibliophile who guides you on an appointment and he will tell you the story of this amazing library of books, most of which come from the seminar Molsheim founded in 1580. One of the jewels of the collection is a bible of Greek XI th century, Novum Testamentum Graecae, offered to Cardinal Charles of Lorraine by the abbess Andlau. Over the years, wars, invasions and transfers many books were lost or destroyed. There remains still some 120 000 volumes specializing in ecclesiastical and Alsatian but also history, philosophy, French and German literature, some incunabula, rare and valuable vellum.
